I grew up in Poway, California; near San Diego. I started my career as an educator at the age of 16, when I taught swim lessons. I soon realized that the standard programs didn't work for all students. I began modifying how I taught swimming to great success. I went on to get a BA in Biology from Azusa Pacific University with the intention of becoming a teacher. I earned my CA Teaching Credential from California State University San Marcos. I taught Middle School science. I discovered that many students in the classroom were having the same problem as my swim students. The method of teaching did not fit their learning style. I chose to start my own tutoring business, so I could meet each student where they were and help them reach their educational goals.
I am a former CA credentialed teacher with a major in Biology. I left classroom teaching, so that I can focus on my students individually. I tutor a variety of ages from kindergarten to college. I am also able to teach a variety of subjects including; English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. I also teach study skills such as note taking, scheduling, test taking and textbook reading. I create individual programs for each student focusing on their needs and use their interests and strengths. I specialize in students who have unique thinking patterns and I am able to adjust my teaching style accordingly. I have experience helping students overcome test anxiety and help them to succeed. I teach only one on one via Zoom or Skype. This is a very different experience than online class. Being on the computer allows us to share information so we can work as partners.
Each session is individual with me. I do not employ other tutors. I do this so I can monitor and adapt my teaching style as students grow. The first session is free. Each session is designed to meet the individual students learning style and their personality. My methods, especially in math, are different than what is used in school, but very effective. Extra practice is provided, but the priority is school work. Over the summer and holidays, lessons are designed to review subjects not yet mastered and to prepare for the next year. Learning should be fun; I incorporate fun terminology (you won’t believe all the crazy things fractions do!) as well as fun assignments. I use song lyrics to teach English elements and keep assignments short, so there is no extra pressure. My cat even comes to visit and check on students. Other pets are welcome as long as they don't become a distraction. Please see side bar for all that I can provide to your student.
Every student has unique needs. Please explain your student's needs and goals, so I can have some options ready to assist you.
